Tony Nominee Cate Blanchett Named 71st Cannes Jury President

The Australian actress will preside over the competition for the 71st festival, which will be held from May 8 to May 19. Though it often features movies that go on to relative arthouse obscurity, in recent years the festival has unveiled many top prestige titles.

Pierre Lescure, the festival's president, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, said they are "delighted to welcome such a rare and unique artist whose talent and convictions enrich both screen and stage".

She succeeds Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, who presided over the jury a year ago for the festival's 70th edition and awarded the prestigious Palme d'or to The Square by Swedish director Ruben Östlund. "Cannes really needs to take emergency measures to show its support for women filmmakers at this crucial moment and putting Cate Blanchett upfront, given her support for Time's Up, is a good sign", Kate Muir, a screenwriter who is also a campaigner with the group Women and Hollywood, said by email.

She'll be the 12th woman to serve as president of the jury.

Blanchett won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's 2004 film The Aviator, and on Oscar for best actress when she starred as Jasmine Francis in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine in 2013.

"This festival plays a pivotal role in bringing the world together to celebrate story", Blanchett said.
