Swansea City's Jordan Ayew on target in Newcastle United stalemate

Swansea took the lead through Jordan Ayew, who took two attempts to beat Karl Darlow.

Swansea City, unmoved at the bottom of the Premier League table with 17 points from 23 games, welcome Liverpool to the Liberty Stadium for their next league game on January 22.

Newcastle were left to settle for a point that will likely increase the Spanish manager's exasperation at a lack of transfer activity and delays in completing a long-expected takeover.

Reaction to come at

Substitute Joselu levelled eight minutes later not long after coming on, threading a sublime finish from a tight angle into the far corner through the legs of defender Alfie Mawson and past the wrong-footed Fabianski.

Gayle drove a left foot shot wide after Swansea were nearly architects of their own downfall again, and the Magpies' wasteful nature was then punished on the hour.

Matt Ritchie found the advancing forward with a ball over the top but Perez, one-on-one with Lukasz Fabianski, saw his tame shot parried by the goalkeeper.

But Carvalhal was disappointed Swansea were not awarded a first-half spot-kick when Mohamed Diame appeared to block a Mike van der Hoorn effort with his arm.

But the visitors were grateful to see the assistant referee Sian Massey correctly raise her flag for offside after Gayle nodded in at the other end.

Gayle came close again five minutes into the second half, but his fizzing effort from 25 yards out flew just wide of the post.

Newcastle stretched their winless home run in the Premier League to seven games and continued to slide towards the relegation zone after missing an array of chances against Swansea, who took the lead against the run of play.

Both teams went for the victor as the game ebbed and flowed - Wilfried Bony going closest when DeAndre Yedlin cleared his attempt off the line in the final minute - but neither could land the decisive punch to secure a massive three points for their respective aims.

- The Swans have kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 Premier League games, conceding 20 goals in the process.
