Serena says motherhood may make her better player

Today, Williams is raising her daughter and has made a return to the tennis court.

The sports star has a history of blood clots, so she was the one who raised the alarm after she found herself feeling short of breath 24 hours after becoming a mum. When the ultrasound didn't show anything, the doctors finally sent her for a CT scan - which showed that several clots had formed in her lungs.

She was given a drip, but her cough caused complications to her C-section. Once she was back in the OR, doctors discovered that a large hematoma had filled her abdomen.

To prevent more clots from dislodging and traveling into her lungs, Ms. Williams told Vogue she underwent another surgery to have a filter inserted into one of her veins.

The tennis ace, who delivered a baby girl, named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., on September 1 previous year, recently shared about post-delivery complications that made her bed-ridden for more than a month. Now, in 2018, she's poised to have another incredible year as she enjoys being a mother to her baby girl and being a wife to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

"Sometimes I get really down and feel like, man, I can't do this", says Williams in the interview.

Medical ordeal Williams told Vogue she had an emergency cesarean section after the baby's heart rate fell dangerously low during contractions.

"I want them, but I don't need them".

She walked out of the hospital room to avoid worrying her mother, and between gasps told the nearest nurse she needed a CT scan with contrast and a blood thinner right away. She quickly anxious that she was getting blood clots in her lungs, and told the medical staff about her symptoms and concerns.

Following her surgeries, she was forced to spend her first six weeks of motherhood unable to get out of bed.

"Maybe this goes without saying, but it needs to be said in a powerful way: I absolutely want more Grand Slams", quipped the 36-year-old.

"Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, 'Why do I feel so sad when I have a lovely baby?' The emotions are insane", she said. "Consider for a moment that your body is one of the greatest things on this planet, and you're trapped in it". "I've started to play more consistently", she said. "That's a different feeling for me".

"I looked at the positive and said I put myself in contention nearly every week and eventually it will have to turn". Serena Williams is just one of many Black moms who experience serious complications during or after childbirth, and is more clear evidence that not enough is being done to make sure Glack moms get the treatment they deserve.

Some days, Williams admitted she feels like throwing in the towel. Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, "Why do I feel so sad when I have a handsome baby?"
