This week's announcement that a standalone film featuring Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is reportedly in the works at Marvel Studios is something that's quite literally been years in the making.

"While Jac didn't get a chance to meet with ScarJo before she was tapped to pen BW, hearing the two are likely to sit down at the beginning of next month to talk about the film and how they see it going", Kroll wrote on Twitter.

Earlier this week, the internet lost it - and understandably so - when it was finally confirmed that Marvel were pushing a Black Widow solo film into production.

At the moment the project hasn't been officially greenlit, but this is a good development for the Black Widow movie. Thor: Ragnarok was basically a cosmic buddy-cop outing with Thor and Hulk; Spider-Man: Homecoming heavily featured Iron Man, who served as the web-slinger's mentor; and as for Captain America: Civil War - well, that was basically just Avengers 2.5. The movie will star Anne Hathaway, who also appeared in another movie Schaeffer wrote called Nasty Women. Some could see the notion of it being r-rated as a risky idea, since Johansson's appearance in six films, (the next one is in this summer's "Avengers: Infinity War.") which were all family-friendly MCU tent-poles. Of course, actress Scarlett Johansson has mentioned she would play the character if given her own movie.

Schaeffer's resume also includes the Disney Frozen short, Olaf's Frozen Adventure. "I think there's a way in with any of the characters".

However, despite Black Widow's prominence in the MCU and her popularity among fans, Romanoff continued to be relegated to the sidelines with supporting roles.
