North Texas MLK parade canceled after funding pulled amid protest threat

City officials said the permit was denied because event organizers didn't have the funding to cover costs associated with having a parade, including security.

Organizers appealed the denial of the permit Friday, but were denied again.

"We definitely will protest this event if he is not removed", activist Dominique Alexander said Monday outside Arlington city hall. "I think that would certainly be something that would have to be looked at, and I think also it has increased awareness based on all of the controversy that we've been dealing with over the past few days". Day parade that was to feature Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as an honorary grand marshal are moving forward with plans to formally cancel the event.

"It's important to hold the parade on Martin Luther King Day because that's the day the country celebrates the efforts and work of Martin Luther King", said Roderick Miles, coordinator of the parade for the Greater Fort Worth Martin Luther King Jr. "We do not endorse this scheduled event".

In Arlington, special event organizers must meet requirements such as providing for insurance, a traffic study, adequate parking and public safety components, Warren said.

Trump Denies Insulting Term at White House Meeting
It's a dignity many in this White House could learn from. "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians", the president said. As for Africa , he asked why more people from "s--hole countries" should be allowed into the US , sources said to The AP.

"We placed the appeal earlier (Friday), but we are not optimistic", said Winsor Barbee, a spokeswoman for the parade. "That's probably two steps ahead of where the process is right now".

The local MLK Committee is partnering with the city's Parks and Recreation Division to host the event, which will include games, face painting, displays and refreshments.

Simmons said she was frustrated that people kept confusing NAACP's involvement with the parade despite the organization explicitly stating they were not involved with the event in their statement.

The city of Arlington on Monday will honor King's legacy with a day of service and has invited community members to participate in volunteer projects.

"Trust me, I'm glad the NAACP does not have to go protest something with MLK in it on MLK day", Simmons said.
