Katie Couric breaks silence on Matt Lauer's Today show firing

Couric told People that the ordeal has been "painful" for her. "It's completely unacceptable that any woman at the "Today" show experienced this kind of treatment".

Couric's opinion on the controversy was sought last month immediately after the bombshell sexual harassment and assault allegations against Lauer were made public, but at the time, Couric said that while the news was "incredibly upsetting", she wasn't ready to talk about it.

She added that she had "no idea this was going on" during or after her tenure. "Matt was a kind and generous colleague who treated me with respect". The 60-year-old TV personality had been co-host of the popular show for more than 20 years, for many of which he worked alongside Katie Couric. The truth is that a joke I created on late night television was only this, as it was utterly contrary to our brother-sister relationship. She said she passed out during the incident, but didn't report it for fear of losing her job.

Still, the entire situation is "very upsetting" to Couric, and although she's still unsure how to fully process Lauer's actions, she's optimistic about the future of Today.

Swansea City's Jordan Ayew on target in Newcastle United stalemate
Gayle came close again five minutes into the second half, but his fizzing effort from 25 yards out flew just wide of the post. Swansea took the lead through Jordan Ayew , who took two attempts to beat Karl Darlow.

In her People interview, however, Couric dismissed the suggestion it was proof that she knew of Lauer's reputation.

Lauer was sacked in November over the allegations of multiple women, one of whom claimed he sexually assaulted her while they worked on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. "Thanks for your interest".

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, NBC News fired longtime Today anchor Matt Lauer after an employee filed a complaint about "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace". "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry", he wrote. Because I am writing this, I still know the thickness of the disappointment and damage I have gone behind at home and in NBC.
