Amazon brings Alexa digital assistant along for the ride with Toyota

A number of carmakers have introduced Amazon Alexa voice commands that can activate the locks and climate control on their cars, but Toyota is going a step further with Alexa integration by bringing Alexa into the vehicle. At CES in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Toyota announced the voice technology would be incorporated with the carmaker's infotainment systems.

Alexa will help drivers and passengers get directions, read the news, and select entertainment options, as well as add items to their shopping cart.

Just which Toyota and Lexus models will have Amazon Alexa hasn't been announced, the automaker told The Car Connection in an email.

"Voice services are rapidly becoming more popular and through our integration with Amazon Alexa, Toyota and Lexus customers will soon be able to easily speak to Alexa in their cars while on the go", said Toyota Connected CEO Zack Hicks. And so here we are, with more news of Amazon and partners integrating Alexa into every product that might come to mind - glasses, cars, mirrors, microwave ovens, mobile accessories, computers and many others. Fans were hoping that Toyota will also start offering the Apple CarPlay support and Android Auto this year but at this point, we still do not know if that is going to happen or not.

While Alexa is yet to be offered in Australia, it is coming in the first quarter of this year. With a simple voice command a user can access an array of information, such as weather, news or sports scores, play games and plug into thousands of "skills", the Alexa version of a smartphone app. Alexa has proved to be compatible with many smart devices and will be an easier way to connect your home than trying to hack together a solution with several different apps or assistants.
