Arkansas-based Walmart also reportedly raised the hourly minimum wage for its US workers to $11 and improved benefit offerings such as parental leave.

Walmart Inc. plans to repurpose some of the Sam's Clubs stores that will close later this month, making them fulfillment centers for e-commerce. That will put the company ahead of Walmart, which anticipates having its "Scan & Go" service at fewer than 200 stores by the end of 2018. The Sam's Club in New Caney was among those closed. Throughout Thursday, customers used social media to ask questions about why the Sam's Club location near them was closing.

That store will close January 26th, but no word on what exact dates the other stores will close.

Sam's Club will shutter 63 of its stores, with customers and some employees saying no warning was given by the company. "This is a decision we made based on what we need to do to maintain a healthy business going forward".

The process at Walmart looks similar: Using an app, customers will scan items (even produce) on their own as they walk through the store. But numerous thousands of workers who will be affected were unaware when they showed up to locked stores on Thursday.

The Sam's Club locations in Alaska - two in Anchorage and one in Fairbanks - were not showing up.

The store wasn't underperforming, Hatfield said, but the company chose to close the location as part of a review regarding the "right mix of clubs" and emphasis on e-commerce under CEO John Furner. But right now, she has just three.
