Water Main Break Floods Terminal At JFK

Inbound flights to John F Kennedy International Airport's (JFK) Terminal 4, the only privately operated terminal on the site, were shut down for several hours and the terminal building partially closed during the incident.

In a statement released before the water pipe break, the Port Authority said Saturday's cold "created a cascading series of issues for the airlines and terminal operators". It also spilled onto the road outside and froze over.

Cotton said the flooding took out two-thirds of the arrivals area of Terminal 4, including the Customs and Immigration processing facility.

Officials are urging travelers to check their airline for their flight's status before coming to the airport.

The right wing of a China Southern Airlines jet collided with the tail of a Kuwait Airways plane early Saturday morning at Kennedy Airport, stranding passengers on each aircraft, according to the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey.

The Port Authority called the delays "unacceptable".

The problem has been now been fixed.

"The continued bitter cold and resulting ground equipment issues are expected to continue delays into the evening", the statement read. "Please allow extra time and contact your airline". Thousands of flights were cancelled because of the winter storm, leaving many travellers stranded at the airport for days.

Terminal 4 reopened before 8 p.m. on Sunday night, as worldwide arrival "resumed operations".

The Kennedy Airport ordeal, which occurred mostly at its worldwide terminals, leaves many unanswered questions: How did all of those flights converge without a plan or gate space?

A flight from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, to Indianapolis for a family of five was canceled over the weekend, and agent Nancy Hawkins, Travels by Nancy, Noblesville, Indiana, had to work to reschedule them. The airport advised travelers to check with their airlines before arriving.

"No one tells us anything", Monica Pierre, a passenger, told PIX11. "My son checked and the cheapest flight back, if indeed one was going, was £2,000 plus pounds".

Forty-year-old Adeola Dorris told the Times that she was trying to get home to Guyana but had been stranded at JFK since Saturday. Though there were no injuries reported on either aircraft, the accident, coupled with the effects of the weather, kicked up a storm of delays.

The cascade of horrors started with the blizzard Thursday, which led to a suspension of flights until Friday morning.

While many are waiting for delayed flights, others are waiting for luggage - some for hours.

"It's far from it, because I mean just look around; there's no place to sit", he said.

At least 280 flights to and from JFK were delayed Monday.

Meanwhile 38 of the scheduled departing flight between 6am and 11.59am are now delayed, and a further nine have been cancelled.
