Iowa top IL in OT to get first Big Ten win

With a 20-point lead in the first half of Thursday night's game, it looked like IL was headed for a feel-good rout over Iowa - and therein the Illini's first conference win of the season.

Iowa, after giving up 54 points in the first half, only allowed 36 and 7 in the second half and overtime, respectively.

Iowa's 20-point comeback was the third-largest in school history, right behind a 22-point deficit against IL in 1987 and a 23-point comeback against Gardner-Webb in 2012.

IL is second in the Big Ten in steals and sixth in the country in forced turnovers at 18.7 per game. The Hawkeyes actually led 90-87 with five seconds left, but Trent Frazier tied it up with a three at the buzzer to force overtime.

IL (10-8, 0-5) received a career-high 27 points from Frazier, who entered the night with 18 3-pointers in 17 games but canned 7 of 11 shots from 3-point range.

For Illinois (10-7, 0-4), consistency is the key. Iowa moves to 10-9 overall, 1-5 in Big Ten action.

IL led 54-41 at halftime.

The buzz-beater didn't faze Iowa, as the team took control by scoring the first nine points of OT.

Alex Wittinger had 20 points and 13 rebounds for IL (9-9, 0-4), which has lost five straight.

Illinois' early 13-0 run seemed to set the game's tone.

The Panthers shot 40 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the line leading for majority of the game. Jennifer Nehls neared a double-double as she was the fourth Panther to reach double-figures with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Four players average in double figures for Iowa. Taylor Roberts scored 18 points with seven rebounds. Tia Wooten was 10-of-10 from the free throw line and finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards. He made 7 of 11 3-pointers.

Iowa plays at Rutgers next Wednesday.

Underwood was frustrated at Thursday's loss, which came on the heels of tough road losses to Minnesota and MI.

"We've had a wide spectrum of guys out, literally since Minnesota", Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said. "Belmont is very good at what they do and very sound". "They will test your defensive principles and that's something we have to be solid in".
