England to play Nigeria and Costa Rica ahead of World Cup

Gareth Southgate's side will play Nigeria at Wembley on 2 June and Costa Rica at Leeds United's Elland Road stadium on 7 June as they prepare for the summer tournament in Russian Federation.

"The match is now confirmed".

Akinwunmi added: "We chose to be strategic in our choice of opponents for the Super Eagles leading to the World Cup, and in total agreement with the preferences of the Technical Adviser. We played Argentina (in November 2017) without even knowing we were going to be in the same group at the Finals".

The statement added that Super Eagles' Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, was elated about the development.

The Three Lions are up against the Super Eagles at the iconic Wembley on June 2.

The opposition at Elland Road this time will be Costa Rica, who were, in fact, the shock winners of England's group at the last World Cup.

England defeated Nigeria 1-0 in a highly entertaining friendly at the old Wembley in 1994 with David Platt scoring the only goal.

The Three Lions are drawn against Tunisia, Panama and Belgium in the first round of Russian Federation 2018.
