CA: Here We Go Again: FAA Investigating Another SFO Landing Mishap

"When the plane was about a mile from the airport, air traffic controllers noticed the aircraft was lined up for Runway 28L and instructed the crew to execute a missed approach", Gregor said.

The flight from Mexico City was cleared by air traffic controllers to touch down on Runway 28R, one of the airport's four principal runways, about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

An Aeromexico flight had to abort its landing Tuesday when it was discovered it was lined up to land on an incorrect runway. The FAA said the Aeromexico pilots had been using their instrument landing system during the approach, which provides guidance to the pilots when landing in low visibility. The FAA is investigating the Air Canada incident along with the National Transportation Safety Board.

Then on October 22, Air Canada Flight AC781 from Montreal landed despite attempts from air traffic controllers to get the pilot to circle around the airport due to uncertainty over whether the runway would be clear by the time they touched down. The FAA has also changed rules over the summer for night-time landings and staffing at the airport's control tower.

In July, an Air Canada jet with 140 people on board almost landed on one of the airport's taxiways where four planes were waiting to take off, prompting the FAA to issue new rules for nighttime landings and control tower staffing at the airport.

Separately, the FAA is investigating an incident last month in which another Air Canada crew ignored or did not receive instructions from the tower to abort a landing.

Longtime American Airlines pilot Chris Manno said "it seems a pilot got left and right wrong in their head", Manno said.

"Aeromexico 668 go around!" an air traffic controller can be heard on audio recordings.

The controller feared another plane that had just landed might still be on the runway, but the Air Canada jet landed safely.

Both incidents happened at night, and there were no injuries in either case.
