Police reported 650 homicides in an annual report on crime statistics, down from 771 in 2016.

The department believes their smart policing strategy and hiring more officers to the force, among other things, helped to drive the homicide and shootings down across the city. The city also saw a 21.55 percent drop in the number of shootings in 2017, going from 3550 shootings in 2016 to 2785 shootings in 2017.

Chicago police said murders across the city decreased more than 15 percent in 2017, but the city has already seen its first murder of 2018. "There is still a lot of work ahead of us, but we're headed in the right direction".

Police said that total citywide crime complaints had fallen by 2% and that they had made 27% more gun arrests in 2017.

Before 2016, the last time Chicago broke 600 killings was in 2003, according to data kept by the Chicago Police Department. The number of yearly homicides in Chicago had hovered between 400 and just about 500, between 2007 and 2015.

President Trump has repeatedly ridiculed Chicago officials for doing too little to stem the violence.

The financial services provider reported $0.84 EPS for the quarter, missing the Zacks' consensus estimate of $1.04 by ($0.20). In other news, VP Richard Levy sold 97,000 shares of the company's stock in a transaction dated Thursday, November 30th.

Nevertheless, CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson said the department would do more to combat gun violence in the new year.

Police have been particularly encouraged by the results of setting up Strategic Decision Support Centers in six of the city's 22 police districts, including those in the most violent pockets of the city. They also provide "additional cameras, gunshot detection systems, and mobile phones to officers in the field who receive real-time notifications and intelligence data at their fingertips", Chicago police say on its website.

Despite the declines in homicides and shootings, 2017's homicide count is still higher than in 2014 and 2015.

The United States' third largest city still ranks No. 1 in murders, with more than the two largest cities combined.

But many cities like Atlanta, Washington and Memphis have higher murder rates when measured per capita. But Chicago's numerical murder rate has been higher than that of the country's two larger cities, Los Angeles and NY.

Over the three-day New Year's holiday weekend 26 people were shot in the city, but that was half as many as last year.
