Washington state deputy shot and killed confronting burglars at home

A Pierce County sheriff's deputy has died after being shot during a response to a burglary late Sunday night.

Deputies were called to the area of 45th Avenue Court East and 200th Street East for an attempted armed burglary at a home shortly after midnight Monday.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputy came under fire while chasing down the suspects after a 911 call warned of an intruder around 11:30 p.m. local time near Spanaway, about 12 miles south of Tacoma, according to a report.

The suspect fled the area on foot and a massive manhunt is underway.

The deputy was taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he died from his injuries.

The department asked in a Facebook posting that the deputy's family, friends, and the department be kept in people's thoughts and prayers and that media avoid the area due to the search for the suspect. Detectives say there were two suspects, one white male and one black male.

It was not immediately known who shot one of the suspects, or whether the deputy managed to return fire. One white male was found dead at the scene but police are actively looking for another black male suspect who is believed to be armed and risky.

No additional information about the home invasion has been released.
