Perseverance is paying off for Jack Wilshere

"No progress there", Wilshere said when quizzed on how contract talks were progressing.

It was not enough to earn Arsenal victory, with Eden Hazard's penalty and a late goal from Marcos Alonso putting Chelsea in front, before Hector Bellerin added a final twist in stoppage time. This year began with a bang last night - stretching as far as he could to reach a loose ball and smash it into the top corner past Thibaut Courtois.

Wilshere has played the full 90 minutes in Arsenal's last four matches and, undoubtedly, his standout moment came against bitter rivals Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

"I've never thought before the game: "I'm a bit exhausted today" and this is the third game in six days", he said. I've certainly lost a little bit of weight. I feel sharper and quicker on the pitch. I just cut it out completely and I think I look better.

Despite the lack of clarity regarding his future, and a slow return to the first team following his spell on loan with Bournemouth last year, the 26 year old has started the last six league games for Arsene Wenger.

He initially declared: "No progress there", before continuing: "I want to be going to Russian Federation but now is not the time to be thinking about that. There's loads of games and I want to be involved in them".

"It feels more like a defeat than like a winning equaliser", he told the club's official website. "I think first of all he deserves a great credit for remarkable strength and we do as well".

The Gunners' next face a trip to Nottingham Forest in the Fa Cup on Sunday.
