Plane crashes in Costa Rica killing at least 12 people

The Public Safety Ministry has posted photographs and video of the crash site showing burning wreckage of the plane.

A small passenger plane crashed in Costa Rica on Sunday, killing all 12 people on board, most of whom were foreign tourists, a spokesman for the public security ministry said.

The victims were 10 foreign passengers, including five members of a single family, and the Costa Rican pilot and co-pilot, local media say.

Enio Cubillo, director of Civil Aviation, said the tourists travelling in the aircraft were staying in a nearby hotel.

It had been scheduled to land at San Jose´s main Juan Santamaria airport at 10:55 am (1655 GMT).

The Costa Rica Star reported that the Nature Air aircraft had problems shortly after takeoff, crashed in the mountains and immediately caught fire, according to witnesses.

"There are no survivors", the daily La Nacion said, citing Security Minister Gustavo Mata.

Punta Islita, which is popular with tourists, is about 140 miles west of the capital of San Jose.
